What Kit Do You Need For Snowboarding?
If you are genuinely interested in snowboarding you need to make sure you get kitted out with the right stuff. It is generally considered bad form to freeze to death on your first outing! Basically what you need are a base layer, a middle layer, jacket and boots, hat, gloves and goggles (for example Oakley Splice Goggles). You do of course need a snowboard too - do not forget that - but this article is about the clothing you need for snowboarding.
The Base Layer
Your bottom layer should keep you warm and retain your body heat. What works best for this is a long-sleeved thermal top and long-john style thermal bottoms. Synthetic materials such as polypropylene are usually recommended. Avoid cotton because it does not insulate very well if it gets wet but you can use wool if it does not make you itch.
The last thing you want is cold feet so you might consider wearing a thick pair of socks. However you might find that thick socks make your feet sweat too much and thin, synthetic, lightweight snowboarding socks - along with the insulation in your boots - might be better.
Trousers And Fleece
What you should be getting here are a sweater or fleece top and snowboarding pants. Fleece is great stuff because it is both warm and lightweight. The key to a lot of the best snowboarding gear is to get the lightest, thinnest clothing that does the job because it is a lot more comfortable to wear.
A good pair of snowboarding pants will be roomy and will have padding on the rear and knees to help you stay dry. Suspender-style snow pants are usually recommended so that you are sure they will not fall down. Your tricks never look so good when your pants fall down!
Boots And Jacket
Thin is once again the best choice for a jacket so that you can move freely without restriction. The jacket should be waterproof and windproof and it is better to spend a little more and get something of decent quality.
Choose your boots carefully and they will last a long time. You might need to get boots a half size bigger than your regular shoe size if you plan to wear thick socks on your feet.
Hat, Goggles And Gloves
Proper snowboarding gloves are highly recommended because they will be waterproof, warm and will have the necessary padding to protect you and reinforced areas to stop them wearing through.
A hat should cover your ears to keep them warm and you really should protect your head with a snowboard helmet.
A good set of goggles will last a long time and pays to get something like Oakley Splice Goggles. Poor fitting goggles will soon get on your nerves so they need to be comfortable, give you the best all-round view and protect you from glare.
