Frequently Asked Questions...
How does a thrust bearing work?
I get how roller / ball bearings work but don't really understand how a thrust bearing works. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
Answer:
Whereas a regular bearing supports a radial force, a thrust bearing supports an axial force.
The method of operation is similar to other types of bearings. Tapered rollers or balls sit in a circular track. A weight on top can rotate on top of these rollers.
One example is in a plastic extruder; the extruder screw pushes molten plastic out one end, but is pushed back on by the plastic with many tons of force. A thrust bearing at the back end of the screw holds it in place while allowing it to rotate freely.
